OBJECTIVES

The end of the transition period on 31 December 2020 will see significant divergence between the EU and the UK. This seminar informs advisers about the tax issues, which will become critical, once the UK is no longer part of the EU tax regime.

The EU has a significant impact on both direct and indirect taxation. The EU sets Customs policies through the application of the Common External Tariff. It provides the framework for VAT. Its powers in terms of Direct taxation are less well known although its State Aid powers affect both Income Tax and Corporation Tax. The Parent/Subsidiary Directive and the freedom of movement of capital have simplified the tax treatment of dividends. This area is likely to become more complicated.

This seminar reviews the EU's current tax powers and what changes when the transition period ends. It will also explain government measures to ease any transition and what steps businesses should take to protect their interests.
